A good mattress is essential to a great night's sleep and once you've found one, it's hard to give it up. Taking your mattress with you will ensure your sleep isn't disrupted, but moving a mattress can be a pain because they're big, unruly, heavy, awkward, and nobody wants to get their mattress dirty. If you're about to move, don't struggle with your mattress, avoid damaging it and hurting yourself by following a few simple guidelines for safe mattress moving.
Tips on How to Move a Mattress Safely
Moving day can be stressful and exhilarating at the same time. The last thing you want or need is to be held back by a piece of furniture. Mattresses are notorious for being hard to move, and the bigger the mattress, the bigger the hassle.
Here are five ways to make moving your mattress faster, easier, and safer.
1. Grab a Friend
The number one recommendation we have for safely moving a mattress is to get help. You may think that you can handle it on your own, but honestly, that's a bad idea. Mattresses tend to be floppy and incredibly difficult to maneuver on your own. Not only do you risk damage to the mattress, you could strain your back or otherwise hurt yourself.
2. Mattress Bags and Plastic
Protect your mattress from dust, dirt, grime, and the elements when moving with a mattress bag or large piece of plastic. You'll need to know what size the mattress is as well as the depth of the mattress in order to get a good fitting mattress bag. If you're using plastic or a tarp to protect the mattress, just wrap the mattress completely and secure it with tape or straps.
3. Keep the Mattress Flat
Your mattress can be damaged if you fold it in order to get it into your car, so we highly recommend using a moving truck. Damage to the coils, border rods, and the foam interior can all happen if you fold the mattress. If you can't transport the mattress flat, carefully stand it on its side and secure it with straps or by placing other items next to it.
4. Be Mindful of the Weather
In a perfect world, moving day would be sunny with a light breeze and no precipitation. The reality is that this isn't a perfect world and you can't control the weather. You can prepare for it, however. If there's rain or snow in the forecast, be sure to cover the mattress to keep it from getting wet.
Be aware of the conditions and wear appropriate clothing, gloves, and non-slip shoes to keep safe.
5. Save the Mattress for Last
Prepping your mattress for moving requires a bit of room, so it's best to wait until you've got all the other furniture, boxes, and other items out of the way first. With a clear, open area to work in, it will be easier and safer for you to get the mattress into a bag or to wrap it properly. Plus, you'll have a place to rest up until the last minute which can be a significant help.
Sleep Well in Your New Home
Once your mattress arrives at your new home, carefully remove it from the bag or plastic and assemble the bed frame and headboard.
Place your box springs and mattress on the frame, add comfortable sheets, blankets, and pillows, and get ready for a great night's sleep. And, rest assured, when you decide to move again, you can take your comfy mattress with you safely.
