7 Reasons Why You're Waking Up in the Middle of the Night

Written by Land of Sleep | August 09, 2021

Getting a good night's sleep is important. After all, if you don't feel refreshed when you wake up in the morning, then you could be in for a long, tiring day!

Why Are You Waking Up in the Middle of the Night?

All of us experience sleepless nights—some of us more frequently than others. What are some common causes of sleeplessness? What can you do to get a better night's sleep? Let's talk about 8 factors that could be contributing to your tossing and turning.

1. Breathing Trouble

If you have asthma or another type of breathing problem, then you may wake up in the middle of the night due to lack of oxygen. You may need to talk to your doctor about how to work around this issue.

2. The Need to Urinate

If you drink a lot of water before going to bed (or any liquid, for that matter), then odds are you'll wake up at 2 a.m. because you need to pee. The remedy for this problem is fairly self-evident.

3. Caffeine

Sometimes it's not how much you drink, but what you drink that keeps you awake. If you drink a strong cup of caffeinated coffee before bedtime, then you may not be able to fall asleep—and if you do, you may not stay asleep for very long. Caffeine contains chemicals that tend to block sleep and stimulate your brain instead.

4. Electronics

Do you ever find yourself surfing the Internet or browsing social media for hours on end before going to bed? If so, you may not be doing yourself any favors in terms of getting a good night's rest.

The blue light in computer screens can actually suppress melatonin, the hormone that tells us to go to sleep. If you're cranked up after spending time on your phone or tablet, that's the reason why.

5. Your Mattress

Your mattress may also have a big impact on why you can't sleep at night. For instance, if your mattress is too soft or too firm, then it won't give your body proper support—and this often leads to tossing and turning, and waking up in the middle of the night.

Moreover, some mattresses are made of cooler materials than others. For instance, mattresses made completely of foam are often warmer than innerspring mattresses. Whether your mattress is warm or cool may play a big role in how well you sleep, too.

6. Temperature

If you're in a warm room all night, and your body starts to sweat, then you may wake up due to the sheer discomfort you're experiencing. Of course, the same is true of rooms that are too cold, especially if you don't have warm blankets to cover your whole body.

7. Anxiety

Of course, sometimes we have trouble going to sleep—and staying asleep—because we have a lot on our mind. Excessive anxiety is just one psychological reason why you may not be able to get the sleep you need night after night.
