How to Improve the Quality of your Sleep

Falling into a peaceful slumber can be a great challenge for many people. You toss and turn in your bed, constantly flipping your pillow, flailing underneath the sheets and getting them twisted in knots around you. Anxious thoughts race through your mind, like that big test that's coming up next week or that presentation at work. Once you get into a position that you're comfortable with and finally manage to drift off to sleep, your alarm buzzes, pulling you out of your precious sleep and signaling the start of your day. You climb out of bed without feeling refreshed in the slightest. If this sounds like a familiar narrative, you are not alone. Countless people across the world suffer from insomnia, which can really detract from their quality of life. Insomnia doesn't just arise out of nowhere. It has real physiological causes that can be corrected by making certain changes in your life. Here we'll look at a few things you can do to ensure that you'll get a better sleep every night.

Exercise

If you're having trouble getting to sleep at night, consider establishing a dedicated exercise routine. It could be going to a gym and lifting weights, joining a sports league, or just running on a local track. The possibilities here are nearly endless, but whatever you do, make sure that you are getting vigorous exercise every day so that you will be sufficiently tired by bedtime. By wearing yourself down during the day, you'll be able to burn off some of that pent-up energy that keeps you awake at night. Not only will this help you sleep better, but it will also give you yet another excuse to start exercising on a regular basis.

Diet

Another key area to consider is nutrition. Think about what you eat on a daily basis and consider whether there might be something that is keeping you from getting a proper sleep. Maybe you drink a lot of caffeine throughout the day. Maybe you're a sugar junkie. If either of these describes you, then it may be time to cut back for the sake of your sleep. Instead, consider replacing the bad foods with healing substitutes. Instead of eating a large plate of deep-fried chicken for dinner, eat a salad instead. Eating healthier foods will allow your body to function properly, which may very well improve your sleep cycles. Another thing to consider is the time that you eat supper. If you are the sort of person who likes to eat a late supper, you might want to consider eating earlier. A rumbling stomach isn't exactly conducive to restful sleep, so it's best to avoid consuming a large meal before bed.

Technology

Another topic that you need to think about is technology. Do you sleep with your phone on your bedside table, awaiting texts from your significant other? Do you have a television in your bedroom that you keep on late into the night? If so, you may want to rethink these decisions. Not only is it very distracting to have devices on at all hours of the night, but it can also damage your quality of sleep. Staring into a bright screen isn't going to help you sleep, but much of the content that you'll be viewing won't be conducive to quality sleep either. Putting negative things into your mind before bed can really affect your sleep. Instead of watching the news coverage about that latest tragedy, consider shutting off all electronics and reading a book instead.

Address Possible Psychological Causes

Many people have constant feelings of intense worry that keep them up at night. If you find that you're unable to sleep because of various life pressures, then it may be time to consult with a professional. It's important to remember that if you are experiencing such difficulties, there are many solutions and treatments available. Consider talking to a therapist and visiting your doctor to look into medical solutions for these issues. When combined together, therapy and medication can be incredibly powerful in reducing the symptoms of mental illness. Although it can often seem as though there is nothing that can be done, rest assured that there are many people who care and who are capable of pulling you out of the black hole of depression, anxiety, or whatever mental health issues you may be struggling with.
