How to Prevent RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome) From Keeping You Awake

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) can make it tough for you to get a good night’s sleep. The uncomfortable sensations in your legs that make you want to get up rather than keep lying down can result in poor quality sleep, which can leave you feeling rundown and lower your immunity to colds and other illnesses. Fortunately, there are several ways to stop restless leg syndrome from interfering with sleep.

Try Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers
Ibuprofen and other nonprescription pain relievers can help reduce mild aching, soreness or burning that some people experience with RLS. While stronger prescription medications are available, they’re not generally recommended since they can become addictive if you take them for a long period of time.

Take Warm Baths
Taking a warm bath can help your leg muscles relax, especially if you massage them while you’re in the tub.

Reduce Caffeine Intake
Cut back on caffeine or stop drinking it altogether for a couple of weeks to see if this helps. Keep in mind that caffeine is also found in chocolate, not just in coffee, tea and soda.

Meditate
Relaxation methods, such as meditation, can relieve stress that triggers RLS. Try meditating before going to bed each night, and learn other relaxation techniques as well, such as yoga, to help minimize stress.

Get Some Exercise
Working out at a moderate pace on a regular basis might help reduce RLS symptoms. Just be careful not to work out too hard, or you could make RLS symptoms worse.

Create a Good Sleeping Environment
When you don’t get enough sleep, RLS can become worse. In order to improve your chances of sleeping peacefully through the night, make sure the temperature in your room isn’t too warm. A cooler environment can actually help you sleep better. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same times each day to get your body used to a regular sleep routine. Also, invest in a high-quality mattress that provides you with comfortable support.

Correct Dietary Deficiencies
Sometimes, an iron deficiency or other nutritional deficiency can aggravate RLS. If this is the case with your RLS, ask your doctor about taking supplements to correct this problem and reduce your symptoms.
