Why Cats Keep You up at Night and What to do to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Similar to energetic kids, cats can stay up late at night, making noise and wanting to be playful in ways that keep others from sleeping. You'll need to do something about this issue if it's causing you to lose sleep, which can affect your daytime schedule.
Here are details on how you and your cat can enjoy a good night's sleep:

Spend Time With Your Cat
One of the best ways to help a cat feel satisfied about getting the most out of a day is to spend about a half hour or more of playtime with him or her. Learn what kind of toys excite your cat by experimenting with objects on a string, toy mice or a soft small ball. Even if it takes a game of hide and seek, figure out what entertains your cat the most. Some people take it a step further and dance to music with their cats. Training your pet to do tricks is also very rewarding.

Get Your Cat Neutered
Cats tend to relax more after they have been neutered, which is the removal of their reproductive organ, whether the animal is male or female. Both humane societies and animal shelters recommend this sterilization to prevent unwanted litters.

Find Your Cat a Companion
On the flipside of neutering, you may want to have kittens so that your cats entertain each other. Or you may just want to get another cat so your cat has a playmate. Either way, finding another cat to be friends with your original cat is a great way to keep them preoccupied so that they're not trying to wake you up. You may want to give them their own space with a cat house that's not near your bedroom.

Feed Your Cats Before Bedtime
Instead of dealing with your cat or cats interrupting your good night's sleep at 4 a.m. hoping to get fed, try feeding them around 10 p.m. or before you go to bed. That usually works better than feeding them in the early evening, which can make them hungry again during your sleep time. Just like humans, cats need a good diet, exercise and plenty of love.
